come on, people:  
1) light years measure distance, not time. this is like saying “you’re a few kilometers late.” 
2) most stars live for billions of years. the milky way galaxy is, what, 100,000 light years in diameter? plus our solar system is located in one of the arms, where stars are more likely to be young. chances are pretty good that a star you see with your naked eye is still alive. 
if you want to use science to justify your cynicism, how about “when you wish upon a star, you’re talking to a distant glob of plasma that cares only about maintaining hydrostatic equilibrium.” ?
